February: Month of the Carnival

Dominican Carnival has been around since the 16th century. History tells that DR Carnival really became a country's tradition after our independence which happened on February, 1844.

Every year, we celebrate our traditional and very popular carnival. This amazing festivity is celebrated every Sunday of the month of February. Our carnival is enchanted by general happiness; you will find a variety of devils cojuelos parades in the streets.

Thousands and thousands of people around the world and the country gathered in the streets to celebrate and enjoy this wonderful holiday. Apart of our traditional parades of devils cojuelos, people can also enjoy concerts by national and international artists and a wide variety of typical foods.

Our famous Carnival is celebrated by region, but these days the carnival that is enjoyed more and the most popular is the one from the city of La Vega. The "Carnaval Vegano" is the most important cultural event in the city, and has been declared a National Folk Heritage.

The streets are full of devils cojuelos all dressed with colorful and striking costumes. Each costume is designed different but the majorities are adorned with mirrors, bells, and other accessories. What really draw the attention of these costumes are the masks, which are typically large, enormous horns, bright colors, big eyes, and sharped teeth.

Below you will find a video and some pictures reflecting the colorful and traditional Dominican Carnival.
